Question 647
I was browsing some forums and read words by a Moroccan that broke my heart and embarrassed me in my discussions with them. Is what was said about Zurarah true? I quote it verbatim because I will respond to them: 1- Sheikh al-Tusi said: ‘Zurarah came from a Christian family. His grandfather, “Sunsun-or, it is said, Sabsun,” was a Christian monk, and his father was a Byzantine slave belonging to a man of Banu Shayban’ ([124]). Zurarah is the one who said: ‘I asked Abu Abdullah about the tashahhud …’ until he said, ‘When I left, I farted in his beard and said, “He will never prosper”’ ([125]). Zurarah also said: ‘By Allah, were I to relate everything I heard from Abu Abdullah, men’s penises would swell upon the wood’ ([126]). Ibn Muskan narrated: ‘I heard Zurarah say, “May Allah have mercy upon Abu Jafar. As for Jafar, there is a deviation in my heart regarding him.” I asked him, “What led Zurarah to this?” He said, “What led him to this was that Abu Abdullah exposed his disgraces”’ ([127]). Statements of Abu Abdullah-may Allah be pleased with him-about Zurarah: 2- For this reason, Abu Abdullah said of him, ‘May Allah curse Zurarah’ ([128]). 3- Abu Abdullah also said: ‘O Allah, if Hell contained nothing but a small bowl, it would still accommodate the family of Ayan ibn Sunsun.’ 4- Abu Abdullah said: ‘May Allah curse Burayd; may Allah curse Zurarah’ ([129]). 5- He also said: ‘Zurarah will not die except in bewilderment; may Allah’s curse be upon him’ ([130]). 6- Abu Abdullah also said: ‘This is Zurarah ibn Ayan. By Allah, this is one of those Allah, the Exalted, described in His Noble Book: “We shall turn to whatever deeds they performed and make them scattered dust” ([131])’ ([132]). 7- He said: ‘Some people are lent faith as a loan, then it is taken from them. On the Day of Resurrection they will be called “the borrowers.” Indeed, Zurarah ibn Ayan is among them’ ([133]). 8- He also said: ‘If he becomes ill, do not visit him; if he dies, do not attend his funeral.’ He was asked in astonishment, ‘Zurarah?’ He said, ‘Yes. Zurarah is worse than the Jews, Christians, and those who say Allah is the third of three. Allah has overturned Zurarah.’ He said: ‘Zurarah doubted my Imamate, so I asked my Lord to grant him to me’ ([134]). If Zurarah came from a Christian family, doubted Abu Abdullah’s Imamate, and is the one who said that he farted in Abu Abdullah’s beard and said of him, ‘He will never prosper,’ what should we expect him to contribute to Islam? The Shia’s authentic collections teem with Zurarah’s hadiths, and he occupies the foremost rank among narrators. He lied about the Household and introduced innovations into Islam such as no one else introduced, as Abu Abdullah said. Whoever consults the Shia’s authentic collections will find this statement confirmed. Burayd was the same, to the extent that Abu Abdullah cursed them both. We place these questions before every Shia who imagines his school of thought sound or stubbornly insists that his creed is true: How can a Shia claim love for the Household while taking his religion from a man who farted in Abu Abdullah’s beard? How can the Shia take their religion from a man who doubted the Imamate of Abu Abdullah-may Allah be pleased with him? How can the Shia weep, strike themselves, and spill their own blood in sorrow for Abu Abdullah while taking their religion from a man who doubted the Imamate of Abu Abdullah-may Allah be pleased with him? How can the Shia take their religion from a man whom Abu Abdullah cursed? How can the Shia take their religion from the sons of monks? Sender: Hussein al-Qallaf - Saudi Arabia
Supporters Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Zurarah was among the most trustworthy and just companions of the Imams (a). The Imams instructed us to take the hadiths he narrated. Here are some narrations: Wasail al-Shia (Aal al-Bayt), vol. 27, pp. 143–144: Abu al-Abbas al-Fadl ibn Abd al-Malik narrated: ‘I heard Abu Abdullah (a) say, “The people most beloved to me, living and dead, are four: Burayd ibn Muawiyah al-Ijli, Zurarah, Muhammad ibn Muslim, and al-Ahwal. They are the people most beloved to me, living and dead.”’ Al-Mufaddal ibn Umar narrated: ‘Abu Abdullah (a) said to al-Fayd ibn al-Mukhtar during a hadith, “When you want our hadith, adhere to this seated man,” and he gestured toward one of his companions. I asked our companions about him, and they said, “Zurarah ibn Ayan.”’ Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Hamid and others narrated that Abu Abdullah (a) said: ‘May Allah have mercy upon Zurarah ibn Ayan. Were it not for Zurarah and his peers, my father’s hadiths would have disappeared.’ Sulayman ibn Khalid narrated: ‘I heard Abu Abdullah (a) say, “I find no one who revived our remembrance and my father’s hadiths except Zurarah, Abu Basir Layth al-Muradi, Muhammad ibn Muslim, and Burayd ibn Muawiyah al-Ijli. Were it not for these men, no one could have derived this. They are the guardians of the religion and my father’s trustees concerning what Allah made lawful and unlawful. They are the foremost toward us in this world and the foremost toward us in the Hereafter.”’ Abu Ubaydah al-Hadhdha narrated: ‘I heard Abu Abdullah (a) say, “Zurarah, Abu Basir, Muhammad ibn Muslim, and Burayd are among those of whom Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘The foremost, the foremost-those are the ones brought near’ ([135]).”’ As for the narrations disparaging Zurarah and those like him, they are understood as taqiyyah intended to protect them from the tyrants, the enemies of the family of Muhammad (a), who used to kill, imprison, or displace everyone among the confidants of the Household (a). The Imams (a) explicitly stated this and explained the purpose of their cursing and disparaging some of their reliable, firmly established companions. May Allah grant you success in every good and prosperity. The Scientific Committee Supporters of Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah establish him on earth) Sheikh Nazim al-Uqayli Muharram al-Haram, 1432 AH
