Question 660
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May prayers and peace be upon the master of creation, Muhammad, and upon his good and pure Household, the Imams and the Mahdis, and may He grant them abundant peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you, my master and guardian, O Riser of the family of Muhammad. My guardian, we supplicate to Allah, the Originator, Mighty and Majestic, to establish you and to make us and all the supporters steadfast with you. Praise be to Allah who guided us to this, for we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us. This is a blessing from Allah, that He made us know you, my guardian. Supplicate that we and all the supporters remain steadfast. My question is that the Exalted said: ‘For one who fears standing before his Lord are two gardens. So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny? Both full of branches. So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny? In both are two flowing springs’ [al-Rahman 55:46–50]. And the Exalted said in the same surah: ‘And below them are two gardens. So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny? Both dark green. So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny? In both are two gushing springs’ [al-Rahman 55:62–66]. What is the difference between the two gardens mentioned in verses 46 and 62? And in the verse, ‘In both are two flowing springs’ [al-Rahman 55:50], and the verse, ‘In both are two gushing springs’ [al-Rahman 55:66], what is the meaning of flowing and gushing? I supplicate to Allah, my master, to comfort our eyes by beholding your authority and your establishment in the earth, and to make us among your servants. Supplicate, my guardian, that I, my children, and all the supporters be granted success.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. The difference between the two pairs of gardens in the two verses is a difference of ranks, stations, and gifts. The verse ‘For one who fears standing before his Lord are two gardens’ speaks of a station higher than the verse ‘And below them are two gardens.’ As for the difference between ‘flowing’ and ‘gushing,’ it lies in the gift. Every human being has what he strives for: ‘A human being will have nothing except what he strives for, and his striving will be seen; then he will be recompensed with the fullest recompense’ [al-Najm 53:39–41]. A flowing spring is a spring that overflows and flows around it, whose gift exceeds the need of its immediate surroundings. It therefore represents a gift which, however much is taken from it, scarcely changes or becomes depleted. This means that the good of these people in the Hereafter is not confined to themselves; rather, it can flow and encompass others. That is, they can intercede, and Allah accepts their intercession. As for the two gushing springs, they represent a gift that is less than the former and limited to a particular amount, but is sufficient for those around it, like water that moves, seeps, and slowly oozes from among the rocks. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
