Question 661

My guardian, do Paradise and the Fire have a term and an end? Allah says: ‘Abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills.’ Where will the people of Paradise and the Fire ultimately go after that?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. There are many decisive and clear verses stating that abiding in Paradise is everlasting. The Exalted said: ‘Those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. Allah’s promise is true, and who is more truthful in speech than Allah?’ [al-Nisaʾ 4:122]. The same applies to the Fire: abiding therein is everlasting. The Exalted said: ‘Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, for him is the Fire of Hell, abiding therein forever’ [al-Jinn 72:23]. This is according to what is deserved and to justice. But the matter belongs to Allah, Glorious and Exalted, first and last. He, Glorious is He, is beneficent, and the dominion and all it contains are His. He may do with it whatever He wills, and no one may question Him if He wills to pardon some of His servants or accept intercession for them and remove them from Hell, which they entered because they deserved it. He may also raise the degrees of some of His servants in the Gardens, so that the kind of their abiding in the Gardens changes as a result. Ahmed Alhasan
