Question 685
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. What is the ruling concerning merchandise that was purchased and later discovered to have been stolen? How must it be handled? May one continue using it? Must one cease dealing with the seller again? Must the authorities be informed that the merchandise is stolen? (I purchased video recordings and later discovered that they were pirated.) May Allah reward you with the best reward of the beneficent. Maryam - United Arab Emirates
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. If it is possible to return the stolen property to its owner, it is returned to him. If it is not possible to return it, one does what is possible, such as giving charity on behalf of the owner or supplicating for him. It is not obligatory to refrain from dealing with the seller, and it is not obligatory to report it.
