Question 696
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send abundant prayers and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon the Yamani of Muhammad, the light of guidance, Ahmed. I work at a pizza shop in Australia as a partner in the business. This shop sells kinds of pizza containing pork, and it also sells pork that is cooked by boiling it in water over a fire. After it is cooked, the cooked pork is placed in the refrigerator. When it is sold, it is taken from the refrigerator and roasted in the oven used for baking the pizza. The oven works by placing food in one side and having it come out the other; some food is put through twice so it cooks well. What is the religious ruling concerning the work and the money earned, both when one is a partner in the work only and when one is a partner in the money and the work, given that the other person-the partner-purchases the pork? What is the ruling concerning lawful food that does not contain pork if it is baked in the same oven as pork or pizza containing pork? What is its ruling if it is baked alone or after pork or pizza containing pork is baked? In other words, what is the ruling concerning the vapor emitted when pizza containing pork and the pork itself are baked?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. There is no problem with the work or the money earned so long as the pork, or food forbidden to eat, is sold to those who regard it as lawful. There is no problem with using the other lawful foods prepared in the same oven. As for vapor emitted from pork, it is not considered impure.
