Question 695

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace be upon my master, guardian, and Imam Ahmed Alhasan (a). My guardian, placing my trust in Allah, I intend to propose marriage to one of the female supporters. I would like to ask about the amount of the dowry in this age, since the amount of the prompt dowry and the deferred dowry must be specified in the official contract in the state courts. Must the dowry equal the dowry of al-Zahraʾ (a), or may it be higher?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. In a previous answer I explained what the dowry of al-Zahraʾ is in this age and in any age: the value of furnishing a home for two people. This is the standard; that is, the dowry is an amount with which the home in which the two spouses will live is furnished. If you want a specific number or amount as an upper limit, it is better that the dowry not exceed the value of forty mithqals of eighteen-karat gold, or its equivalent in any currency. If the dowry is to be divided into a portion paid promptly and a portion deferred, the mentioned value is divided between them. In general, it is better to avoid any high dowry, even if the husband is well-off, because it is a bad custom in the believing community. It is from a woman’s blessing that she accepts a small dowry, and from her ill omen that she raises the dowry and boasts of it. Ahmed Alhasan
