Question 732
The Imam (a) said that fasting on Ashura is recommended. Did he mean the entire day, or only until midday, as the Twelver Shia do?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
I hope your transmission will be precise; may Allah set your affairs aright. I did not say that fasting on Ashura is unconditionally recommended. Rather, I said: ‘And fasting on Ashura as an expression of grief.’ As for abstaining until midday, it is not called fasting such that there would be grounds for confusion between it and something else.
