Question 739

If a family lives in a Western country that pays benefits to families even if they do not work, do the benefits paid for the wife and children belong to them while the father remains the head of the family and responsible for supporting it, or is the matter as this father says? He says that if the woman has financial income while she does not work, she has no right to it; the man has the right to hold her to account for it and command her to spend it upon the home and children; and the husband’s duty to support the family lapses in this situation.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

The wife’s benefit belongs to her, and she may do with it as she wishes. The husband has no right to question her about it, and his obligation to support her does not lapse; rather, he must support her. The benefits of children who have not reached puberty belong to them, and the father may administer spending them upon the children, but he must make up any shortfall in their support. This is the religious ruling. May Allah grant you success and set your affairs aright. I ask you to deal with one another with mercy, affection, and reconciliation. You are a family, a husband, and a wife; you are not a business company such that your dealings should be material. The husband must fulfill his duty toward his wife and children with love and contentment, and the wife should be good, affectionate, and forgiving toward her husband. I believe that a woman can generally build her family and home and attain her husband’s satisfaction through calmness and a good word, and thereby attain Allah’s satisfaction. In general, even if the husband mistreats or falls short toward his family, the wife can treat him with goodness and mercy and seek through this the satisfaction of Allah, Glorious and Exalted, first and last. What is with Allah remains and grows, Allah willing, and you will see its fruit-the correct word is ‘fruit’-in this world and the Hereafter. Ahmed Alhasan
