Question 779

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Praise be to Allah who guided us to this, for we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us. My guardian, your sinful servant has some questions: Is it permissible to kill beings that harm us, such as mosquitoes, snakes, and so forth? My master, what is the reason for the pain and killing that they endure? Is it permissible to kill harmful creatures such as mosquitoes and snakes? My guardian, what is the reason for the pain and killing they endure? Sender: Abd al-Basit - India

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. It is permissible to kill mosquitoes if you consider that they cause the transmission of malaria, for example. It is permissible to spray pesticides to kill insects that damage agricultural crops, and it is permissible to kill rodents harmful to crops. But it is disliked to kill a harmful animal without cause. A venomous snake, for example, may not be killed if it is in the wilderness or forest and harms no one. Even if a harmful snake is found near people, it is better for a specialist to capture it and move it away from where people live. But if the matter is difficult for you, there is no problem with killing it.
