Question 794
There are several questions: Q1: Is it permissible to trade in antiques that are not known to be stolen or otherwise?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
It is permissible if they are personal property. Q2: There are signs in the Quran symbolizing prostration. Must one prostrate when reading them? A: I set out the details of prostration when reading the Quran in The Laws of Islam. This is the text: Second: the prostrations of the Quran are fifteen. Four are obligatory, and they are in the surahs Alif Lam Mim, Ha Mim al-Sajdah, al-Najm, and ‘Read in the name of your Lord.’ Eleven are recommended, and they are in al-A‘raf, al-Ra‘d, al-Nahl, Bani Israʾil, Maryam, twice in al-Hajj, al-Furqan, al-Naml, Sad, and ‘When the sky is split open.’ Prostration in the four decisive surahs is obligatory for the reciter and attentive listener, and recommended for one who merely hears it. The remainder are recommended in every case. None of the prostrations contains a takbir, testimony, or salutation. Purity and facing the qiblah are not conditions for them. If a person forgets one, he performs it later. Q3: Is it permissible to undergo cosmetic operations, whether for men or women, such as reshaping the nose and removing marks present on the face? A: It is permissible. Q4: If cosmetic operations are permissible, are they permissible only upon parts at which looking is lawful, or absolutely? A: If the cosmetic operation is not necessary, it must be ensured that it falls within the religious limits of looking and touching. But if the person is compelled to undergo it and a practitioner of the same sex is unavailable, looking and touching are permissible to the extent of the necessity. Q5: A person has become accustomed to consuming opium. He cannot leave it abruptly and-as he says-cannot ever leave it because he has been accustomed to it for twenty years. He is a supporter who believed in the call of truth and learned of its prohibition, as his brother supporters-may Allah, the Exalted, protect them-conveyed to him. What is this brother’s duty? A: Consuming narcotics and intoxicants is forbidden. An addicted person can receive treatment for addiction. Q6: What is the ruling concerning clapping the hands during celebrations and birthday commemorations held for the births of the Imams and others? A: It is permissible. Q7: What is the ruling concerning dried raisins placed in stews and boiled with water? A: There is no problem with them. Q8: A supporter works as a driver for a company in Canada and transports pork in his vehicle. Is this permissible? A: It is permissible. Q9: Is it permissible for a woman who is a supporter to marry a man who does not believe in the call of truth and its companion (a)? A: It is permissible if he is a Muslim and not a Nasibi, but it is disliked. Q10: One of the brother supporters treats his father badly because his father insults him and accuses him of many things. He loses control of his nerves and greatly mistreats his father. He asked that a question be directed to explain the solution to such a problem. A: The Exalted said: ‘If they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness, and follow the path of one who turns to Me. Then to Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do’ [Luqman 31:15]. He must treat his father with beneficence and mercy. It is not permissible for him to transgress against his father. If his father mistreats or harms him, let him try to avoid friction with his father and avoid anything that causes conflict between them. If necessary, let him try to reduce meeting his father to the least possible amount until the relationship between them improves. Allah is the Guardian of success. Q11: A woman says she is a seminary student and asks for the scientific proof concerning a matter that afflicts her. She has asked the jurists of the end times for the jurisprudential ruling concerning this matter, and she wants the jurisprudential ruling and a scientific explanation for the cause of this phenomenon she experiences. She says: ‘After ablution, air exits from me, but it is from the front, not the anus. What is the religious ruling, and what is the scientific analysis of this phenomenon?’ A: The religious ruling is that it does not invalidate ablution.
