Question 804

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace, O Most Merciful of the merciful. To my master and the son of my master, peace be upon them both, Imam Ahmed Alhasan: peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. A group of Kurdish Shia, together with some Kurdish Shafiʿis of the Sunni school, object to the Shia generally on account of what is mentioned in their books-that the Kurds originated from the jinn. How sound is this claim in terms of the weakness or authenticity of the narrations? Some of those called religious authorities have forbidden marrying them or dealing with them in light of a narration attributed to Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him). In one narration it is said: ‘Al-Hasan ibn Mitʾal narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Jaʿfar ibn Bashir, from someone, from one who narrated to him, from Abu al-Rabiʿ al-Shami, who said: I asked Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), saying, “Among us is a people of Kurds who continually come to us to trade; we mix with them and transact with them.” He said, “O Abu al-Rabiʿ, do not mix with them, for the Kurds are among the jinn from whom Allah lifted the veil, so do not mix with them.”’ On the other hand, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Musa ibn Babawayh al-Qummi, who died in 381 AH, mentions in his book ʿIlal al-Sharaʾiʿ, volume two, page 527, concerning the same subject, in the chapter ‘The reason for which mixing with the Kurds is disliked,’ the following: ‘Saʿd ibn Abdullah narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ali ibn al-Hakam, from one who narrated to him, from Abu al-Rabiʿ al-Shami, who said: I asked Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him)-meaning Jaʿfar al-Sadiq-and said to him, “Among us is a people of Kurds who come to us for trade and we transact with them.” He said, “O Rabiʿ, do not mix with them, for the Kurds are a tribe of the jinn from whom Allah lifted the veil, so do not mix with them.”’ Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Masʿudi, who died in 346 AH, says in his book Muruj al-Dhahab wa-Maʿadin al-Jawhar, volume two, page 123, regarding the origin of the Kurds: ‘Among the people are those who connect them to the bondmaids of Solomon son of David (peace be upon them both). When his kingdom was taken from him and the devil known as al-Jasad had intercourse with his bondmaids-while Allah protected the believing women from his having intercourse with them-the hypocritical women became pregnant by him. When Allah restored Solomon’s kingdom and those bondmaids who were pregnant by the devil gave birth, he said, “Drive them away to the mountains and valleys.” Their mothers raised them and they multiplied, and that was the beginning of the lineage of the Kurds.’ Sender: Abu Fatimah-from among the Kurds who have recognized the truth of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them), and one of the supporters of the Yamani (peace be upon him)

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. The claim that the Kurds who exist today are a people from the jinn, that their origin is from the jinn, or that they are unfit is entirely false and incorrect. The Kurds are among the children of Adam like everyone else; there is no distinction between them and others except through God-consciousness. A God-conscious Kurd is better than an Arab Alawi Fatimi who denies the truth. Any narration, or understanding of a narration, that contradicts the Quran is falsely attributed to them (peace be upon them) and has no value, because the Imams said that they do not make a statement contrary to the Quran. May Allah grant you success: does the Quran distinguish between a Kurd, an Arab, and others among the children of Adam?! ‘O mankind, indeed We created you from a male and a female and made you peoples and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honorable of you before Allah is the most God-conscious of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and All-Aware’ [al-Hujurat 49:13]. Everyone is invited to the table of heaven, and those who attend it are the children of Allah and His beloved ones, whether they are Kurds, Indians, Africans, Arabs, Chinese, or others among the children of Adam. Those who reject the food of heaven are the children of Iblis and the fuel of the Fire, whether they are Arabs, Kurds, Indians, Chinese, or others. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
