Question 839
O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and his pure family. Questions come to me and I want to answer some who cast doubts upon us. Question: what is the difference between temporary marriage and fornication? Please answer as soon as possible. Thank you. Ahmad Ali Saʿd - Eastern Saudi Arabia
Scientific Committee Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. The difference between temporary marriage and fornication is like the difference between permanent marriage and fornication: Allah Most High legislated temporary marriage and prohibited fornication. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan (peace be upon him) explained the conditions of temporary marriage that prevent this legislation from being exploited for corruption. They include a minimum duration of six months and public announcement or witnesses. Other conditions can be found in Sharaʾiʿ al-Islam, volume three, by Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan (peace be upon him). May Allah grant you every good.
