Question 144
Is a person described as a tamtam prohibited from leading only those who pronounce the letters correctly, or is such a person absolutely prohibited from leading?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Such a person may not lead someone who recites correctly. The tamtam whose leadership is not valid is one whose recitation changes the meaning or who does not understand what is being recited, as is clear in al-Shara'i: 'If the imam makes grammatical or recitational errors in a way that changes the meaning, or does not understand, the imam may not lead a proficient reciter; likewise one who substitutes a letter, such as the tamtam and similar cases.'
