Question 97
What is the ruling on banks in Iran? Are they Islamic banks, and does paying an increase on a loan from them constitute riba?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
I explained previously that the money held by governments ruling Muslim lands belongs either to the Imam or to the Muslims generally. Therefore, believers may take interest from banks. But paying interest to a bank on a loan is not permissible and is considered prohibited riba.
