Question 95
I keep my money in a Swedish bank, and at the end of the year the bank gives me interest. I send that interest to poor people in Iraq in order to avoid riba. I assume I receive no reward for this, but I want to stay away from riba. I am also compelled to keep my money in the bank to protect it from theft. Am I acting correctly or incorrectly?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Riba applies between believers, and between a believer and a Muslim who does not show hostility toward the family of Muhammad (a) in word or deed. There is no riba between a Muslim and a non-Muslim. Therefore, the interest given to you by the bank belongs to you. You may spend it on yourself, give it in charity, or use it as you wish in a way pleasing to God. You are rewarded for giving it in charity because it is money you own and have given in charity.
