Question 61
What is the ruling on carbonated drinks, including Coca-Cola, which are said to contain a percentage of alcohol?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
There is no problem with carbonated drinks. The presence of a percentage of alcohol in food or drink that does not cause intoxication does not make it unlawful, even if that percentage was added rather than being formed in the food or drink through its preparation. However, food or drink is considered impure and unlawful to consume if a quantity or percentage of alcohol or wine prepared for intoxication is added to it, even if that percentage is extremely small and does not cause intoxication.
