Question 73
Dental implants are now a major development in dentistry because they treat tooth loss without involving the other teeth around the missing tooth. A material has been discovered and developed that caused a major change in dental implant treatment. The material is derived from proteins from pig embryos and pig bone and is used to fill bone defects during dental implantation. It has been used worldwide for years and by approximately four million patients. Is use of this material forbidden or permissible? Must patients who have received it be informed? Are we sinful for having used it previously when we did not know the ruling? The question mentions the products Geistlich Bio-Gide and Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD), marketed as Emdogain, from Swiss companies.

It is permissible to use this material. It is not obligatory to inform patients for whom this material has been used, and there is no sin upon the person who used it for patients. Rather, a doctor is rewarded for treating a patient if the doctor intends through the treatment to draw near to God, Glorified and Exalted.
