Question 74
May a snake be kept in the home as a pet? Are there animals that may not be kept as household pets, or animals other than dogs that are impure?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
It is permissible to keep a pet animal in the home. It is recommended to keep birds, fish, and turtles as a means of warding off harm from some harmful jinn, especially harm affecting children. As for a dog, it is permissible to keep one for guarding, herding, or hunting.
