Question 41
How is an animal ritually slaughtered or nahr performed, what are the four vessels that must be cut, and what is the ruling on cutting off the animal's head?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In slaughter, the four vessels in the neck must be cut: the windpipe, esophagus, artery, and vein. Cutting the spinal cord is prohibited, but if it is cut the slaughtered animal does not thereby become unlawful. Nahr is specifically for camels. It is performed by inserting a knife or sword into the hollow at the base of the camel's neck once, twice, or more. Its head may not be cut off and it may not be slaughtered in the ordinary manner until it has died by nahr.
