Question 42

Meat and chicken come to us from Muslim countries of different schools whose people do not believe in the wilayah of the wali of God (a). The packages say that the animals were slaughtered according to the Islamic religious method. We know that in large slaughterhouses chickens are suspended, a worker cuts at their necks, and a conveyor carries them to the cleaning machines. We do not know whether they are directed toward the qiblah or whether the religious conditions of slaughter are observed; sometimes boxes even contain chickens that the worker forgot to slaughter and that still have their heads. What is their ruling, my master and successor?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

The front of the animal must be directed toward the qiblah. God's name must be pronounced for each animal by the Muslim person who personally performs the slaughter, and the four vessels must be cut. Cutting the spinal cord is prohibited, but the slaughtered animal does not become unlawful merely because the spinal cord was cut unless the slaughterer did so out of disregard for the ruling. If these conditions are not observed in the slaughterhouses, it is not permissible to eat the meat they produce even if the slaughterhouse is in a Muslim country. If the conditions are observed, it is permissible to eat the meat they produce even if the slaughterhouse is in a non-Muslim country.
