Question 50
If a serious quarrel occurs between two brothers, is it permissible to lie in order to reconcile them? What is the religious duty toward these two brothers if each goes his separate way? How should one reconcile them? Should one lie in order to reconcile them, or leave them as prey to the accursed Iblis?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
You speak—may God grant you success—as though reconciliation between people were confined to lying! Fear God and reconcile them with kind words, truthfulness, and trustworthiness. Remind them of the days of God, of the friends of God, of their deeds, and of their tolerance toward those who mistreated them. Remind them of the reward God has prepared for those who do good to people who have wronged them: 'Obey God and the Messenger so that you may receive mercy. And hasten toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-conscious: those who spend in prosperity and adversity, who restrain anger and pardon people—and God loves the doers of good—and those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember God and seek forgiveness for their sins—and who forgives sins except God?—and do not knowingly persist in what they have done. Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein; and excellent is the reward of those who work' (Quran 3:132–136).
