Question 102
We work on producing poems and chants connected with the blessed Call and want a guideline for permissible sound effects, such as drums, horns, clapping, certain organ or piano sounds, string-like sounds generated from a piano rather than from an actual string instrument, or sounds produced through a computer. What may be used?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The sounds of clapping, drums, and horns used for signaling, such as those used in war or similar situations, may be used. Sounds produced by electronic devices are also permissible if they are not formed in the style of entertaining or pleasure-inducing music. Examples of permissible sounds include drops of rain, the whistling of wind, war drums, sad sounds, and similar effects. Any form of chanting or vocal repetition ordinarily used by people of immorality, amusement, and musical entertainment must be avoided, even if it contains no music or sound effects.
