What is the ruling on wearing the jambiya—a dagger worn at the waist as an adornment in Yemeni and Omani custom—if it is decorated with gold coins and its handle is made from the horn of an animal such as a rhinoceros?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
There is no problem with wearing this dagger. The problem is hunting and killing animals—especially endangered animals such as rhinoceroses—in order to use their horns. This is wrong, and the hunters and traders who do this should not be encouraged by purchasing the horns and ivory they obtain.
