Question 97

Some women do not observe certain religious rulings concerning hijab, perfume, high heels, tight clothing and other forms of adornment. All methods of enjoining good and forbidding wrong have been tried, and sometimes the matter leads to serious problems that may even reach divorce. What is the solution if the woman herself is a believer in the call?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Hijab is a religious obligation, and a woman must observe the limits of legal hijab that I explained previously. If she does not observe them, she commits something forbidden, and there will therefore be consequences in this world and the Hereafter for violating God's limits. A husband is obliged to instruct and guide his wife to observe hijab and its legal limits, but he is not required to divorce her if she fails to observe legal hijab. A woman also may not wear perfume when there is a possibility that she will be present in or pass through a place containing non-mahram men. Some perfumes in particular contain substances intended for sexual stimulation; it is not appropriate for a respectable woman to wear such perfume outside her bedroom or marital home, because it is specifically intended to arouse her husband. There is no problem with wearing shoes with high heels or of a particular color; that is permissible. As for tight clothing, what is impermissible is clothing so tight that it reveals the details of a woman's body.
