Question 131

My master, I seek safety from the gravity of what I did and the ugliness of my action, and I seek repentance for what my hands committed. I recently entered a temporary marriage and consummated it with my wife without witnesses or public announcement. Later, when I reviewed the issue in Jurisprudential Answers, I realized my mistake. At the time I was ignorant of the legal ruling. What should I do now? What is required of me after learning what I did? Is what I did considered zina? I call God and His angels to witness that I did not deliberately omit witnessing or public announcement; I did so only because I was ignorant that it was obligatory. Had I known, I would never have omitted it. My master, regret and sorrow overwhelm me and I seek repentance. Relieve me from the torment that has exhausted me and from the ignorance that led me to omit an obligation and commit something forbidden.

God willing, nothing is required of you so long as you were ignorant of the legal ruling. May God grant you success and guide your steps. I ask God to encompass you in His mercy and reward you greatly for your fear of transgressing His limits. He is my Guardian and He takes care of the righteous.
