Question 112

May a woman wear a prayer wrap fashioned like an abaya when visiting holy places? At security checkpoints they sometimes prevent it, even though it covers like an abaya and differs only in its dark color.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

It is not obligatory to wear an abaya, prayer wrap or anything beyond ordinary legal hijab. Requiring an abaya when visiting holy places is an incorrect practice and may sometimes cause much more harm than benefit. I currently have no authority to change what those controlling these holy places impose; they set rules according to their own view, even when that view is very limited and narrow.
