Question 136
What is meant by 'adornment' in the noble verse, and what does it include for a woman? What is the age limit in the phrase 'children who are not yet aware of women's private aspects'? And what is meant by the verse, 'Let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they conceal of their adornment'?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
For a woman, 'adornment' means everything that she is obligated to conceal from the gaze of a non-mahram, and it includes her entire body except the face, hands, and feet. The child from whom a woman must observe covering is a discerning child. Ordinarily this begins after completing seven years of age, though it may be at eight, nine, ten, or later depending on the child's condition and level of understanding. The meaning of God's words, 'Let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they conceal of their adornment,' is producing sound from the anklet.
