Question 135
May a woman wear clothing that reveals some of her attractive features in front of her adult brother, father, or adult son—while of course covering the obligatory private parts—such as a nightgown or similar clothing? If not, what are the limits of what she may reveal before these relatives?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
God, the Exalted, says: 'Tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and not display their adornment except what ordinarily appears thereof, and to draw their coverings over their bosoms, and not display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, those whom their right hands possess, male attendants who have no sexual desire, or children who are not yet aware of women's private aspects ... And turn to God in repentance, all of you believers, so that you may succeed' (Quran 24:31). What a woman may reveal before non-mahrams is the face, the two hands, and the two feet. What she may reveal before her mahrams is the area of the necklace and above, the portion of the arms that she needs to uncover for wudu, and from the middle of the lower leg downward. Before her husband, she may reveal her entire body.
