Question 25
What is the ruling for a girl who reaches puberty but, because of her young age, does not observe the rules of fasting and sometimes knowingly and sometimes unknowingly does things that invalidate the fast? If she is now older, must she make up the past fasts and offer expiation?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If a person who has reached puberty deliberately invalidates the fast, both make-up and expiation are required. If the make-up is neglected until another Ramadan arrives, an additional mudd is due along with the expiation for deliberately breaking the fast. If the fast was broken or invalidated out of ignorance, only the make-up fast is required.
