Question 46
The Laws of Islam says that if a person fasts the 30th of Sha'ban with the intention of Ramadan because of an indication, it is sufficient. What is an example of such an acceptable indication?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
An indication is any sign that makes it more likely that the day is the first of Ramadan without being sufficient by itself to establish that fact, such as the testimony of a single believer. As explained in The Laws of Islam, it is better and recommended to fast the 30th of Sha'ban with a recommended intention; if it later turns out to have been part of Ramadan, the fast is sufficient.
