Question 90

When a person in i'tikaf leaves for a permitted need, what is meant by avoiding sitting? For example, how may he visit a sick person at home or in a hospital without invalidating the i'tikaf?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

While on the way, he should avoid sitting merely to rest. There is no problem with sitting in a shaded place while visiting the sick. Since he is in i'tikaf and left only for a necessity, he should not stroll under shade or spend time sitting along the way; he should fulfill the need, limit himself to what is necessary, and return to his i'tikaf.
