What is meant by avoiding shade during i'tikaf? If fulfilling a necessary need requires entering a roofed house or riding in a covered vehicle, does that invalidate the i'tikaf?

It does not invalidate it, as explained above. Whatever is necessary for fulfilling the need presents no problem.
