Question 36

Is it permissible to take money for making up fasts on behalf of deceased people?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Acts of worship are not valid when performed in exchange for money. I answered this matter previously. It is permissible only to take money for performing Hajj on behalf of another person, because the money is taken for travel and expenses, not for performing the act of worship itself. These are the previous answers: Question 211: A believer gave me 10,000 as payment for hiring someone to perform prayers on behalf of his deceased father. What is the ruling on this trust? Habib Khuraybit Ali — Najaf Answer: In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. Taking payment for praying or fasting on behalf of a deceased person is invalid, because there is no intention of drawing near to God Almighty in such prayer or fasting. Were it not for the payment, the person would not pray or fast on behalf of the deceased; thus his prayer and fasting are performed for money, not for God Almighty. If there is no eldest son upon whom making up what the parents owed is obligatory, or there is an eldest son but he is unable to make it up, and there is no volunteer to perform the prayers and fasts owed by the deceased, then charity is given on behalf of the deceased: one mudd of food for each day of fasting, and one mudd of food for the prayers of one day and night. The money should be used according to this explanation. Praise be to God. Question 121: Is it permissible to take payment for performing Hajj on behalf of a deceased person, or is it like fasting and prayer and therefore impermissible? Sender: Husayn al-Hilali. Answer: In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. It is permissible.
