Question 61
What is the interpretation of the noble verse: ‘That is so. Whoever venerates the symbols of Allah-indeed, that is from the Godwariness of hearts’? What is meant by the symbols of Allah? Sender: Zayd Safa
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. The symbols of Allah are the proofs that point to Allah, Glorious and Exalted. Among them are al-Safa and al-Marwa, because between them Allah’s power was manifested to Adam, Eve, Abraham, and Hagar (a), and consequently to all people: for Abraham and Hagar through the spring of Zamzam, and for Adam and Eve when Adam descended upon Mount al-Safa and Eve upon Mount al-Marwa. Through the meeting of these two mountains-Adam and Eve-human life proceeded upon this earth, just as the spring of Zamzam flowed later. The pilgrimage therefore contains veneration of Allah’s symbols, and venerating them is venerating Allah’s power in the person’s heart. Among Allah’s symbols are Mount Arafat, al-Mashar al-Haram, and the traces of the prophets, messengers, and vicegerents (a). They themselves (a) are the greatest symbols of Allah, so mentioning them is veneration of the greatest symbols of Allah, Glorious and Exalted. They were called sha‘a’ir-symbols-because the believing person perceives in his heart the power of Allah that was manifested through them.
