Question 62

The Exalted said: ‘Your Lord revealed to the bees: “Take houses among the mountains, the trees, and what they construct”’ ([44]); ‘Then eat from every kind of fruit and follow the ways of your Lord, made easy. From their bellies comes a drink of varying colors in which there is healing for the people. Indeed, in that is a sign for a people who reflect’ ([45]). What is the meaning of the noble verse, and what connection do the bees have with the prophets, messengers, and purified Imams, and specifically with the Sayyid (a)? Sender: Ibrahim Rughayl

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Allah, Glorious and Exalted, created nothing in vain. Rather, everything is according to a measure, determination, and far-reaching wisdom, so that the person may reflect upon Allah’s creation and, through this reflection, recognize the truth. How often He, Glorious is He, urged the people to reflect upon His creation so that perhaps they might be guided to the truth: ‘Have they not looked into the Kingdom of the Heavens and the earth and all that Allah has created, and considered that perhaps their appointed time has drawn near? In what discourse after this will they believe?’ ([46]); ‘He is the One who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light and determined for it phases, so that you may know the number of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create that except in truth. He explains the signs for a people who know’ ([47]). Among the bees are signs through which the person recognizes the truth. They gather honey from the trees, and in honey there is healing for bodies. Likewise, the prophets, vicegerents, and their Shia gather knowledge from the good and blessed tree, and in knowledge there is healing for spirits. Likewise, the kingdom of the bees perishes if it loses its queen. At first, a group of false queens forms in the kingdom, exactly like the condition of the scholars who do not act. They produce unfertilized eggs and thereby deceive the remaining bees with this false, illusory production, so that the kingdom’s fate is destruction after it gradually dwindles. There is more than one false queen in a kingdom that has lost its queen. They do not agree upon a single, coordinated movement of the hive. Each one surrounds herself with a retinue of bees after deceiving them that she is a true queen, and in this way the kingdom becomes divided because of the false queens. If you carefully followed the condition of the false queens in the kingdom of the bees, you would find it closely resembles the condition of the scholars who do not act, who bring corrupt knowledge after drinking from stagnant water and cause the nation to divide after it loses its prophet and Imam. There is also a sign in the bees concerning sacrifice and self-offering. When an enemy attacks the kingdom of the bees, the bees attack the enemy in defense of the kingdom, the queen, and the remaining bees. Every bee that stings the enemy inevitably loses its life. Despite this, the bees proceed to sacrifice themselves without hesitation for the sake of the kingdom. In this is a sign and a lesson in distancing oneself from the ‘I.’ In this brief response I have tried to illuminate the path a little for you, so that you may follow for yourself the condition of the bees and their kingdom and perceive the extent of the resemblance between them and the people of religion-whether truthful, deceived, or lying. You will then know that Allah speaks to the people through everything: stone, tree, and animal ([48]).

Concerning the words of the Exalted, ‘Your Lord revealed to the bees,’ Abu Abdullah (a) said: ‘We are the bees to whom Allah revealed: “Take houses among the mountains.” He commanded us to take Shia from among the Arabs. “And among the trees,” He says, means from among the non-Arabs; “and from what they build,” means from among the clients. The drink of varying colors is the knowledge that comes forth from us to you.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 42, p. 110. (Commentator.)
