Question 97
In His name, the Exalted. Peace be upon you. I have some questions for Your Eminence concerning our awaited Imam (a). Q1: Concerning the narrations about the duration of the Proof’s rule-7 years, 9 years, or 11 years-and given Your Eminence’s meeting with the Imam, can you specify for us how long the Imam’s rule will be? Q2: Concerning the Supporters of the Proof, whose number is 313 persons, what of the rest of the believers throughout the world? Q3: Is it possible to know the time remaining until the appearance of the Proof (a)? Q4: What signs remain before the appearance of the Proof? Sender: S. K.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. A1: The narrations differ in specifying the duration of Imam al-Mahdi’s (a) rule because in one instance what is meant is Imam al-Mahdi’s (a) rule, in another the rule of the First Mahdi, and in another the rule of the Second Mahdi. As for the narration that counts the duration of the rule as hundreds of years, it concerns the period of the Mahdis’ rule. A2: The 313 are the select companions of Imam al-Mahdi (a). They are not all who believe in him, nor all his commanders. Rather, the result is the belief of millions and the extension of the state of truth, knowledge, and justice over every part of this earth. A3: The rise and the appearance of the true matter against the oppressors are present in the Quran with complete clarity. Because the known time is so manifest and evident in the Quran, it is neither seen nor known: ‘Indeed, the Hour is coming; I almost make it manifest, so that every soul may be recompensed for what it strives’ ([175]). That is, the hour of the Qa’im’s rise is manifest, not hidden. But if you are asking me to specify its time, I do not specify a time ([176]).
