Question 128
Concerning barley water, is it lawful or unlawful for a sick person? If it is lawful, are there conditions? Sender: Fatima Ali
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. If the barley has not fermented, it is permissible to drink its water. If the barley has fermented, it is not permissible to drink its water, even for treatment. That is, it is permissible to soak the barley and extract its water by pressing it or by another method, but only before fermentation appears in it.
