Question 139

The Exalted said: ‘The Most Gracious taught the Quran, created the human being, and taught him the clarification’ ([281]). How is it that ‘the Most Gracious taught the Quran,’ while the veil was unveiled for the Messenger Muhammad (s), and the veil is the Quran? Is the Most Gracious the one who created the human being? Is ‘the human being’ a general or specific term? If specific, who is meant by this creation? What is the clarification that the Most Gracious taught the Quran? Hamid Abu Anwar-Holy Najaf

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Read the meaning of the clear and ambiguous in The Allegories, Vol 1, so that you may know that an ambiguous passage has many meanings and that each meaning has more than one referent in the external world. As for the verses from Surat al-Rahman, ‘The Most Gracious taught the Quran,’ know that the gate of the Divine Essence-Allah-from which effusion reaches creation is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Indeed, the Most Gracious is the outward aspect of the gate facing creation, and from it effusion reaches creation. The Most Gracious is Allah’s gate, Glorious and Exalted. The Quran is Muhammad (s). Although the Quran was the veil of light, Muhammad (s) encompassed it and it manifested through him, so the Quran and Muhammad (s) became one. ‘Created the human being’: The human being is Ali ibn Abi Talib (a). The Most Gracious, Glorious and Exalted, created the human being-Ali-from the Quran; thus Ali (a) was created from the light of Muhammad (s). ‘Taught him the clarification’: Clarification is one of the names of the Quran. What is meant by it is the Quran at a lower rank, beneath the rank and station of Muhammad (s). The Most Gracious, Glorious is He, taught the human being-Ali-the clarification-the Quran-from the Quran-Muhammad. The clarification is the manifestation of the Quran at a lower rank. Thus the clarification is from the Quran; indeed, it is the Quran ([282]). Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)

↑ [281] Al-Rahman 55:1–4.

↑ [282] Al-Husayn ibn Khalid narrated from Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (a): I asked him about the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, ‘The Most Gracious taught the Quran.’ He said: ‘Allah, Mighty and Majestic, taught Muhammad the Quran.’ I said, ‘He created the human being and taught him the clear expression.’ He said: ‘That is Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful (a). He taught him the clear expression of everything the people need.’ Mukhtasar Basair al-Darajat by al-Hasan ibn Sulayman al-Hilli, p. 57. It is known that Muhammad and his Ahl al-Bayt are the Quran, as Imam Ali (a) said: ‘I am the speaking Quran.’ Yanabi al-Mawadda li-Dhawi al-Qurba by al-Qunduzi, vol. 1, p. 214. Muhammad (s) is therefore the Quran and the city of knowledge, while Ali (a) is its gate. The Messenger (s) taught him all his knowledge and entrusted it to him, as in the following hadith. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s) said: ‘Gabriel came to me with a rug from Paradise, and I sat upon it. When I came before my Lord, He spoke to me and communed with me. I learned nothing except that I taught it to Ali. He is the gate of the city of my knowledge.’ Then he called him and said: ‘O Ali, your peace is my peace and your war is my war. You are the banner between me and my nation after me.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 83, p. 149. Thus Allah, Glorious is He, taught Muhammad the Quran until he became the Quran, and He taught Ali through Muhammad-the Quran. (Commentator.)
