Question 153

We experience a difficulty whose two sides are reliance upon Allah on one hand and dealing with causes on the other. What is the decisive statement concerning it? Abd al-Razzaq Hashim-Basra

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. There is no contradiction between relying upon Allah, who causes causes, and acting through causes. The believer must see Allah as the One who causes causes before the cause, with it, and after it, because there is no power except through Allah. This world is the world of causes. One who says, ‘I rely upon Allah,’ while not working has lied, because Allah commands him to work. The Exalted said: ‘It is He who made the earth manageable for you, so walk among its regions and eat from His provision, and to Him is the resurrection’ ([297]). Thus Allah, Glorious and Exalted, says, ‘Walk among its regions’-that is, act through the causes that He made manageable for you. Praise be to Allah alone. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
