Question 154

The Exalted said: ‘Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham concerning his Lord because Allah had given him kingship? Abraham said, “My Lord is the One who gives life and causes death.” He said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “Indeed, Allah brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west.” Then the one who disbelieved was confounded, and Allah does not guide the oppressive people’ ([298]). What is the interpretation of the verse above? Who argued with Abraham? Is he the one who disbelieved, or someone else, and who is that other person? Shalan Hasan-Wasit, al-Hayy

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The one who argued with Abraham (a) was Nimrod-may Allah curse him. The one who was confounded is every disbeliever in the heavenly messages, Nimrod and others, such as some Shia, or those claiming to be Shia, who fight the vicegerent of Imam al-Mahdi (a) and disbelieve in the heavenly messages and the proofs of the prophets and vicegerents. Al-Baqir (a) described them as Thamud. May Allah curse and disgrace them and place them in the depths of Hell with the companions of the first Saqifa, because they are the companions of the second Saqifa: the end-time scholars who do not act, who deceived the people, altered the divine religion, and legislated, permitted, and prohibited according to their desires ([299]). Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)

↑ [298] Al-Baqara 2:258.

↑ [299] Al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas narrated from Abu Abdullah (a), who said: ‘… His words, “Thamud denied through its transgression”: Thamud is a faction from among the Shia. Allah, Glorious is He, says: “As for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them.” It is the sword when the Qa’im (a) rises. His words, “The messenger of Allah said to them,” mean the Prophet (s): “Allah’s she-camel and her drink.”’ He said: ‘The she-camel is the Imam who gave them understanding from Allah, and “her drink” means that with him is the source from which knowledge is drawn. “But they denied him and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it.”’ He said: ‘In the Return. “And He does not fear its consequence.”’ He said: ‘He does not fear anything like it when he returns.’ Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 42, p. 72.
