Question 157

The Exalted said: ‘Among His signs are the night and day, the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or the moon, but prostrate to Allah, who created them, if it is Him you worship’ ([305]). What are the sun and moon? What is the prostration that is forbidden? Was there prostration to them such that it had to be forbidden? Abu Mustafa-Basra

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The verse’s outward meaning is clear and needs no explanation. There are those who believe, or believed, in the absolute divinity of the sun and moon-that is, Allah’s Proof and his vicegerent in every age, and Muhammad (s) and Ali (a) in particular. I previously explained Abraham’s story in the Quran ([306]). What is forbidden is prostration to them on the basis that they possess absolute divinity. What is intended is to regard them as a direction toward Allah, Glorious and Exalted-that is, through them Allah is known ([307]). As for the anthropomorphists, in former nations misguidance led them to believe in the divinity of this sun and moon in this corporeal world. The origin of this deviation is that matter in the Kingdom of the Heavens: that the sun is Allah’s Proof and the moon is his vicegerent, or Muhammad (s) and Ali (a) in particular. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
