Question 170
A foundling son grew up with a family for twenty-one years. There is the issue of arranging his marriage, the issue of attributing him to the father of the family, and the issue of whether or not to inform his wife. It should be noted that he neither fasts nor prays, and he knows his situation. It should also be noted that he has committed no crime or sin. What is the ruling concerning him?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. A foundling is not judged to be the child of fornication unless it is known by valid religious evidence that he is the child of fornication. Consequently, a foundling is regarded as a person whose father and lineage are unknown, and no person may attribute him to himself. If he were to do so, the attribution would not be valid. Rather, if he is a believer, then he is your brother in religion. The believing community must treat him as someone of unknown lineage, not as the child of fornication. Whoever treats him as the child of fornication commits a sin. As for this particular person’s situation, he must be urged to pray and fast, and before that, urged to believe and to show allegiance to the guardian of Allah. A wife who accepts his situation as a person of unknown lineage should be sought for him. Allah is the granter of success. Sayyid Ahmed Alhasan Vicegerent and Messenger of Imam al-Mahdi (a)
