Question 256

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Peace be upon you, O Household of Prophethood, repository of knowledge, and place where revelation and the sending down descend. My question: I currently work in Iraq for a civil society organization. It lends owners of small enterprises a sum of money in return for interest deducted in advance, with repayment made in monthly installments. I am not a borrower; rather, I work as an employee of this organization. The organization’s capital comes from grants made by donor countries, not from the Iraqi people’s money; that is, the capital is American or European. I worked with them on the basis of the Yamani Sayyid’s answer to one of the brothers concerning the permissibility of taking interest-bearing loans when the owner of the money is a disbeliever or Nasibi. I ask the blessed Sayyid or one of the supporter brothers to answer me concerning whether employment by this organization is lawful or unlawful, knowing that the organization’s principal office is located in America. May Allah grant you success in what pleases Him and in supporting His religion. Sender: Adham al-Tai

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. May Allah grant you success and support His religion through you. Good are you, and good is the earth your feet tread, O you who supported Allah and Allah’s religion in a time when those who support the truth are scarce. There is no usury between a believer-or a Muslim who professes love for the family of Muhammad (a)-and one who disbelieves in the prophethood of Muhammad (s)-or one who sets himself in enmity against the family of Muhammad or their Shia because they follow them. It is permissible for a Muslim to take an interest-bearing loan from non-Muslim money, and working in such institutions is permissible. Ahmed Alhasan
