Question 311
Why are circumambulation, walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and casting the pebbles seven; why are the days of the week seven; why are the heavens and earths seven; why does a child live from his seventh month; why is prostration upon seven bodily parts; why are there seven stars pointing to the Pole Star (Polaris); and why are there the seven oft-repeated verses and the seven Solomonic covenants? … Tell me about anything consisting of seven. I hope Ahmed Alhasan will answer it fully. Allah willing, if you answer it, I will become one of Ahmed Alhasan’s supporters, with decisive evidence. Thank you. Sender: Dhu al-Nurayn - Saudi Arabia
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. The heavens are seven, and the rest refer back to the heavens. Circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah are for seeking forgiveness and repenting from the sin of denial and heedlessness in remembering the covenant and pledge. They are seven so that each circumambulation corresponds to one of the seven heavens. A human being who exists in the lowest heaven has a body in this physical world, or physical heaven, and has a spirit-which is his soul-at the lowest boundary of the first heaven. The human spirit is what manages his body. Thus the human being exists in the lowest heaven, and what is required of him is to ascend to the seventh heaven so that his intellect may be completed and he may know his Lord. The Exalted said: ‘He is the One who created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you forth as an infant, then so that you may reach your maturity, then so that you may become elders. Some of you are taken in death before that, and so that you may reach an appointed term, and perhaps you will reason’ ([44]); that is, perhaps you will ascend to the universal seventh heaven, the heaven of intellect. The Exalted also said: ‘I did not create the jinn and humankind except that they worship Me’ ([45]); that is, that they know Me. The human being’s innate nature qualifies him to reach the universal seventh heaven. His circumambulation and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah therefore announce his repentance, his seeking forgiveness, and his readiness to strive in the way of Allah and upon His straight path in order to reach the universal seventh heaven, the heaven of intellect … You may read further detail in the book The Allegories.
