Question 312

Peace be upon you, and best wishes to you every year. Will the money used in the state of Imam al-Mahdi (a) be gold and silver, or paper money like that which exists in the world? Sender: Jaafar - Saudi Arabia

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Regarding your question about the means that expresses the value of production or labor in the state of the Mahdi: may Allah have mercy on you, it is not limited to gold, silver, and certain metals on the basis that they have a high value and can express the value of other things. Value can also be expressed through paper currency, government bonds, electronic records, and other means that can be adopted to express the value of production or labor. Even if gold, silver, and precious metals were used to express the value of production, they too would need something to express their own value, because they are production and labor. In the state of the Mahdi, which will extend for as long as Allah, Glorious and Exalted, wills, the value of production and labor will be expressed through multiple means; it will not be limited only to gold, silver, and the paper currency familiar today. Yes, this blessed state’s passage through particular circumstances during particular periods may compel it to deal through a particular means, but that does not mean remaining limited to that means for expressing the value of production and labor. What we must know is that the general human justice that will spread in the state of the Mahdi is the fundamental factor in the spread of justice and equity, and therefore in eliminating poverty and material need. Thus a person in the state of the Mahdi will be just, at least to some extent, with his Lord when he turns to Him in worship and gratitude and with sincerity. A person will be just with the society around him when he loves for people what he loves for himself. In other words, the divine morals that the Mahdi will spread and with which human society will be adorned will lead to eliminating material poverty after spiritual poverty has been eliminated. This will occur on both the individual and societal levels. The spiritually rich individual will certainly be materially rich through contentment, which is a treasure that never perishes; and the spiritually rich society will certainly eliminate material poverty from its members through social and economic solidarity.
