Question 324

The Seal of Prophethood. The First Mahdi is the first of the three hundred and thirteen. He is from Basra; there is a mark on his right cheek and dandruff on his head; his body is like the body of Moses ibn Imran (a); upon his back is the Seal of Prophethood; he possesses the will of the Messenger of Allah (s); and after the Imams he is the most knowledgeable of creation concerning the Quran, Torah, and Gospel. At the beginning of his appearance, he will be a young man. The Messenger of Allah (s) said: ‘… Then he mentioned a young man and said: When you see him, pledge allegiance to him, for he is the vicegerent of the Mahdi’ ([60]). Is there a visible seal upon the back of the Yamani (a), which can be seen with the eye and contains the will, as stated in this narration? Are the remaining descriptions, such as dandruff on the head, visible and capable of being seen? Sender: Abu al-Rahamat - Saudi Arabia

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Regarding the Seal of Prophethood, it is upon the back of every successor among the successors of Muhammad (s), the Imams and the Mahdis (a), and it is the seal of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad (s). As for whether it is visible in the outward form of the body, no; but Allah can reveal it to whomever He wills and make it visible for him to see. Allah can also show it to whomever He wills among His servants, whether in a vision or an unveiling. As for the mark, the dandruff, and the body’s resemblance to the body of Moses (a), these are outward and can be seen with the eye. There are also other traces that are signs. Some remain and can always be seen with the eye, but their condition changes, and at times the flow of blood may also accompany them as an indication of a past event. Some cannot be seen with the eye, but Allah can reveal them to whomever He wills among His servants … Regarding the Seal of Prophethood, I ask you to know that Allah may place a visible sign upon the back of the infallible one that can be seen with the eye as an indication of the Seal of Prophethood, but it is not the true Seal of Prophethood; it is only an indication of it. The Seal of Prophethood is not in the perishing material body, but in the spirit. Light radiates from it to the heavens, and the angels and the righteous servants of Allah for whom Allah wills to remove the veils from their insight see it, so that they may see His signs, Glorious and Exalted.
