Question 345

I have some other questions outside the subject of the call: My son Mahmoud is three years old. He was born with a deformity of his penis (hypospadias). We performed surgery for him, but it did not succeed. We now have another appointment (12/7/2009) for consultation and perhaps another operation for him in the occupied State of Israel. Should I proceed with this matter or leave it? I love reading, but I find it difficult to remember what I read. Is there something that will help me with remembering? If I read about recommended acts, such as supplications, visitations, or deeds, and do not perform them out of laziness, is there any sin upon me? I also have a question concerning the time of true dawn, which I explained in some detail at the following link: http://www.almahdyoon.info/vb/showthread.php?p=2643#post2643 Its summary is: Prayer timetables rely on astronomical calculations and the sun’s position below the horizon to determine the time of the dawn prayer. Through astronomical programs, I noticed that the dawn prayer time in some timetables is when the sun is 19.5–16 degrees below the horizon, while I noticed that true dawn does not become apparent until the sun is between 13.5 and 12 degrees below the horizon. Hearing a rooster’s call at this time is an indication that true dawn has risen. This time is about sixty minutes before sunrise. My question is: May I use this criterion-the sun’s degree below the horizon using astronomical programs, sixty minutes before sunrise, or the rooster’s call-to determine the beginning of the dawn prayer time and abstention from food for fasting, if I lack the means to observe the rise of the first and second dawns? The difference between the timetable times and the time I mentioned is between thirty and fifty minutes. Is there another method for becoming certain of true dawn besides looking at the horizon, since that is difficult under some circumstances and at some times? Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. You may proceed with completing your son’s treatment. May Allah grant you success. For memory: Take a cup, put a little honey in it, add warm water, recite over it Surah al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, and Surah al-Tawhid, and drink it before breaking your fast. It benefits memory, Allah willing. Repeat this act as much as you can. There is no sin upon you if you read about a recommended act and do not perform it. Regarding the time of dawn: if it is possible to observe and recognize it by the sign I explained in The Laws, then that is the criterion. Otherwise, it is when the sun is nineteen degrees below the horizon. If this is not possible, it is an hour and a half-that is, ninety minutes-before sunrise. Ahmed Alhasan
