Question 401
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Complete peace through the presence of our Master, the Imam who is granted victory by Allah. Question 1: What is the ruling on shortening the two noon prayers while I am returning by train to the city where I reside? Peace, and may Allah send His prayers upon Muhammad and his family, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Sender: Ali - Morocco
Supporters Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send His prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them abundant peace. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. This is a passage quoted from the book The Laws of Islam, and it contains the answer to your issue: ‘It is not permissible for a traveler to shorten the prayer until the call to prayer is hidden from him. It is not permissible for him to take the dispensation before that, even if he intends to travel at night. Likewise, upon returning, he shortens until he reaches the point where he can hear the call to prayer-from a human voice, not loudspeakers-of his city; when he hears it, he performs the prayer in full.’ End. This means that if you have returned from a journey in which you traversed the legally prescribed distance, you do not perform the prayer in full until you reach the place where you could hear the call to prayer of your city in an ordinary voice without a loudspeaker. If you reach that place and have not yet prayed, then your prayer at that point is performed in full, not shortened.
