Question 426
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace be upon the People of the House of Prophethood, the repository of the message, and the place where revelation and inspiration descend. Whoever seeks Allah begins with you. It occurs in the noble verse: ‘Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, “Appoint for us a king so that we may fight in the path of Allah” …’ ([41]). 1. Who was this noble prophet? What were his name, description, and condition? 2. Why did Allah not choose this prophet himself to be the king? 3. Was Talut’s kingship a general kingship over the Children of Israel, or only leadership of the army? 4. Was Talut (a) a proof over this prophet mentioned in the verse? Sender: Abu Yusuf - Iraq
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. A1-2-3-4: The prophet was Allah’s prophet Samuel-Ismail-from the descendants of Jacob (a). As for his description and condition, his condition was similar to that of Ismail, the son of Allah’s prophet Abraham (a). His mother Hannah was also barren, like Sarah (a), the wife of Allah’s prophet Abraham. She dedicated him to Allah, Glorious is He, and he served in the House of Allah like Mary (a). Allah sent him as a prophet to the Children of Israel. In his time the Children of Israel were rebellious against the command of Allah, Glorious is He. In the last days of his life, they returned, repented, and a righteous generation appeared among them. They asked him to appoint a king over them under whose banner they could fight, so by the command of Allah, Glorious and Exalted, he appointed Talut. Talut followed the command of Allah’s prophet Ismail (a). After Talut and his army defeated Goliath and his army, Allah commanded His prophet Ismail (a) to appoint as his successor David (a), who had been a soldier in Talut’s army. As for why Allah’s prophet Ismail (a) was not the king: he was a prophet and Allah’s vicegerent upon His earth, and he was the king appointed by Allah. But they wanted a king under whose banner they could fight and who would fight alongside them, because in that time the king had to go forth with the army and fight personally. Allah’s prophet Ismail (a), meanwhile, was an elderly man in the last days of his life. For that reason, they asked him (a) to appoint over them a king capable of fighting. May Allah grant you success in every good and make you among those who see and those who hear and comprehend the words of Allah, Glorious is He. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
