Question 447

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. A question concerning the condition of my father, al-Abadi. My father suffered a stroke that affected his left side, so he cannot move. This condition greatly affected his mental state. Because he previously had diabetes, he urinated frequently even before his latest illness. When he became ill, his mental state declined until we began using diapers for him, because he does not know when he urinates. When the urine in his bladder increases, he cannot control it. This condition does not correspond to that of a person with urinary incontinence who knows when he urinates. My father has almost completely lost the sensation of the time of urination. What is his duty in this condition? Is it dry ablution, ablution as for a person with incontinence, or what? The other matter is that my father has a problem with prayer. He makes many mistakes because he does not focus and may speak with the children during his prayer and then complete it. Another matter is that he forgets the number of units and also the number of prostrations, so he may prostrate two or three times. He is extremely sensitive and does not accept it if we tell him that he made a mistake. What is his duty concerning prayer, and what is our duty toward him concerning his prayer and its acts? I ask Allah that the response come quickly, because we do not know his duty or ours. We are now using dry ablution for him so he can perform prayer. Sender: Abu Ali - Iraq

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. Regarding his inability to control urine, he purifies himself from it when possible and performs ablution. Regarding his frequent forgetting, lapses, or even doing something incompatible with prayer, such as speaking: if the matter is outside his control-for example, because of old age and weakened comprehension-there is nothing against him, and, Allah willing, his prayer is accepted. You are not charged with monitoring his prayer and reminding him of forgetting or lapses within it. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. Ahmed Alhasan Jumada al-Awwal 1431 AH
